Architecture of the Taj Mahal - (The monument of an eternal love)


Taj Mahal in Agra is regarded as one of the seven wonders of the world, and its architectural beauty has never been surpassed. The Taj is the most beautiful monument built by the Mughal Emperor shah Jahan in memory of his beloved wife,Mumtaz Mahal who died. This monument would symbolize the beauty of their eternal love.


Construction began in 1631, and over 20,000 workmen and master craftsmen worked laboriously for 22 years to give shape to the emperor's passionate dream! The material was brought in from all over India and central Asia and it took a fleet of 1,000 elephants to transport it to the site. The complex was finally completed in 1653 at a cost of 32 Million Rupees on the banks of river Yamuna in Agra. The names of proud chief architect who worked on the Taj have been noted as Ustad Isha and Isa Muhammed Effendi.


This building consists of 5 parts .Those are ,The Darwaza or maingateway,the bageecha or garden, the masjid or mosque, the naggarkhana or rest house ,and the rauza or the Taj Mahal mausoleum.

The Taj Mahal was built on 580m X 300m (1902 ft X 984 ft) land .The building was erected in 186ftx186ft square in shape platform, marked at each corner by a 162.5 feet high minaret. Topped with a huge central dome with 60 ft diameter and it rises for over 80 ft. An area of 3 acres is levelled at 50 meters above river bank.

Taj Mahal is India's most famous architectural wonder.
